How to Install the GIMP

First you need to download the files.

Go to the GIMP Downloads page at:
  http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html

For windows 2000, XP, Vista
  Download GTK+ 2 Runtime Environment version 2.10.6 - gtk+-2.10.6-1-setup.zip

For Windows 98 or ME
  Download GTK+ 2 Runtime Environment version 2.6.10 - gtk+-2.6.10-20050823-setup.zip

For all versions of Windows
  Download GIMP for Windows - gimp-2.2.14-i586-setup-1.exe

Then go to the plugins oage at:
  http://registry.gimp.org/plugin?id=3892
  Download Windows Gimp Deweirdifyer - BackgroundWindow-2.1.zip

Install the GTK+ 2 Runtime Environment
  • Unzip the file by double-clicking on the zip file
  • Then double click on the setup file within the zip file
  • At the first Setup screen, click on "Next"
  • At the License screen, click on "Next"
  • At the Location screen, click on "Next"
  • At the Select Components screen, click on "Next"
  • At the Ready to Install screen, click on "Install"
  • At the Finish screen, click on "Finish"
  • You are now ready to install GIMP

Install GIMP
  • Double click on the gimp-2.2.14-i586-setup-1.exe file
  • At the first Setup screen, click on "Next"
  • At the License screen, click on "Next"
  • At the Location screen, click on "Next"
  • At the Select Components screen, click on "Next"
  • At the File Association screen, click on "Next"
  • At the Start Menu Folder screen, click on "Next"
  • At the Select Additional Tasks screen, click on "Next"
  • At the Ready to Install screen, click on "Install"
  • At the Finish screen, deselect "Launch The GIMP" and click on "Finish"
  • GIMP is now installed

Install Windows Gimp Deweirdifyer
  • Unzip the files by double-clicking on the BackgroundWindow-2.1.zip file
  • Extract the files
  • Copy the backgroundwindowhook.dll and the backgroundwindow.exe files to C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins
  • They will be detected automatically when you start GIMP

Run Gimp
  • The first time you run GIMP you'll see a fullscreen window titled The GIMP, along with some other windows in the background
  • Click on the Edit menu in the fullscreen window, then select Setup
  • It will show gimp-2.0.exe in the GIMP Application field
  • Change this to gimp-2.2.exe and click on OK
  • Then close the GIMP windows
  • If they don't close
  • press CTRL-ALT-DEL
  • Click on the Task Manager button
  • Click on the Applications tab
  • Select the GIMP program by clicking on it once
  • Click on the End Task button
  • If there's more than one GIMP window, repeat the last two steps until they are all closed
  • Now start GIMP again
